Am 16. Juni 2000 wurde in Stockholm beim Treffen des Technical Committee 207 (Environmental Management) der International Standard Organisation (ISO) der Novellierungsprozess der internationalen Umweltmanagementnorm ISO 14001 offiziell unter folgenden Maßgaben begonnen:

”The revision of ISO 14001 is limited to concideration of issues related to compatibility of ISO 14001 with ISO 9001 and to clarification of the existing text of ISO 14001. Any changes to the existing text should help understanding and implementation by users without resulting in additional requirements in ISO 14001. The revision of the standard will be guided by the following list of principles:

simplicity; clarity; effectiveness and efficiency; impact on resource allocation; meets the aims of the standard; flexibility of the standard; ease of use of the standard; impact on existing users; verifiability; not increasing bureaucracy; compability with the other elements of the standards; compability with ISO 9001; take special account of the needs of SMEs; impact on Developing countries and translatability

Im Rahmen der Revisionsdiskussion geht es also im wesentlichen um folgende Fragen:

- Existieren textliche Unklarheiten, die Schwierigkeiten bereiten?
- Gibt es Kompatibilitätsprobleme zur ISO 9000er?
- Besteht Anpassungsbedarf bei einzelnen Anforderungen?

Eine intensive inhaltliche Diskussion, beispielsweise über “Legal Requirements”, “Continual Improvement”, “Prevention of Pollution”, “External Communication”, “Integration with other Management Systems Standards”  findet statt dessen im Rahmen der parallel verlaufenden Revision der ISO 14004 (Guidelines) statt.
